My mother is in need of a new car after her moron boyfriend destroyed her little Saturn. She has no money and I don’t want to spend a whole lot so I’ve been browsing Craigslist and the FB marketplace for cars under $2k, looking for mostly things like elderly owned Buicks (going to look at a 2002 Buick Century with 62k original miles, hope that pans out) and in my search I found a 2002 Suzuki Grand Vitara with 100k miles at a buy here/pay here dump.
Out of interest I drove out to look at this car because on paper it looked like it’d be fine; they wanted $1500, it had a fine amount of miles, and it had enough space to haul groceries or dogs or whatever. Long story short, the car had some serious transmission issues so I didn’t buy it, but in the 30 minutes or so I spent puttering around trying to figure out if it was just woefully underpowered or if the transmission was refusing to behave I noticed that the interior at least seemed…really well put together.
After I got home I started doing some research and it seems like people like these things, and I can (kind of, hard to judge based on one with a bad transmission) see why.
So, what am I missing? Do these little SUVs have some flaw that I’m not seeing or are they as cool as they seem?
