22 year old male driver that was recently involved in two accidents that were my fault. Right now I’m under my father’s insurance plan, and they won’t be renewing us this coming February because of me (whoops).
So as for my car situation, I lease a Honda Civic with my twin brother, under which are both of our names (but his is the primary). We have collision and liability coverage and all that; fairly comprehensive.
So it looks like my options are to either shop around and stay on my dad’s insurance, but basically double our payment, or for him to drop me and I go to find my own plan. However, I’m trying to find a solution that would (ideally) cost me the least, and I’m having trouble figuring it out mostly due to the fact that my brother and I share a car.
My knowledge on car insurance is fairly limited, but (correct me if I’m wrong) collision and that type of coverage follows “the car”, while liability and that type of coverage follows “the driver”. Because of this, would it be possible for my brother to remain on my dad’s insurance, covering his own liability and collision for the car, while I go off and find my own liability coverage and still drive our shared car?
To make matters worse, our insurance coverage is based in New York where our parents live, but my brother and I recently moved to Massachusetts. Ideally, we’d rather not re-register our car and get hit again with taxes and whatnot, and I’m not sure if we could remain under our dad’s plan if our car was registered in Massachusetts.
Sorry to throw so much at you guys, and especially a situation as complicated at this, but I really don’t know what to do. Even if all my options are shitty and very limited, I’d still like to learn something from all of this, so any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
